Scientists unveil the fastest RAM yetLondon, August 14 : German researchers have created a faster and more energy efficient version of the RAM used in computers today.

Santiago Serrano-Guisan and Hans Schumacher of the Physical-Technical Federal Laboratory of Germany have revealed that their version of RAM is about 10 times faster than the existing magnetoresistive random access memory (MRAM), which hardware companies think will in a few years dominate the market.

"Present MRAM are programmed by pulses of about 10 nanoseconds duration. So we are ten times faster," New Scientist magazine quoted Serrano-Guisan as saying.

Robot vehicle surveys deep sea off Pacific Northwest

Washington, August 14 : A newly developed robotic vehicle has successfully completed its first scientific mission by surveying deep sea off the Pacific Northwest.

Developed by a team of scientists and engineers from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and the University of Washington (UW), the robot, called ‘Sentry’, is capable of diving as deep as 5,000 meters (3.1 miles) into the ocean.

The vehicle surveyed and helped pinpoint several proposed deep-water sites for seafloor instruments that will be deployed in the National Science Foundation (NSF)’s planned Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI).

Facebook named world's top social networking site San Francisco  - Facebook has overtaken MySpace to become the world's most popular social networking site with 132 million unique visitors in June, according to new figures from web tracking firm ComScore.

The study also found that Facebook's visitor growth far outpaced that of MySpace, with Facebook visits up 153 per cent on an annual basis, compared to just 3 per cent growth for MySpace. Other social networks showing strong global growth include Hi5 (100 per cent) Friendster (50 per cent), Orkut (41 per cent) and Bebo (32 per cent).

Washington, August 13 : E-medicine—prescribing medicines via the Internet—has been found to outperform the tradition system of visiting a doctor’s clinic, in treating patients with erectile dysfunction (ED), in a recent study.

Researcher in Utah randomly selected 1,000 patient medical records from patients seeking ED treatment from Jan. 1, 2001 to Dec. 31, 2005.

While half of the patients used the online prescriber, and the rest consulted a physician for treatment.

Using statistical analyses, the researchers compared the safety of both approaches in treating patients who had ED.
