New York, Mar. 24 : A United Nations body has ruled that the continuing detention of Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi is not only illegal under international law, but also under the Burmese law.

Suu Kyi, the only Nobel peace laureate in detention in the world, is held under Burma''s 1975 state protection law.

Yangon  - United Nations special envoy Ibrahim Gambari on Monday met Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi at a government guesthouse in Yangon, official sources said.

The meeting lasted about one hour and 20 minutes, witnesses said. The content of the talks was not immediately revealed but should be disclosed later Monday when Gambari was scheduled to meet with members of Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy, Myanmar's main opposition party.

Yangon - Detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi is thin and malnourished after refusing to receive food deliveries at her home-cum-jail for almost a month, her lawyer said Monday.

Kyi Win, Suu Kyi's attorney who has met with her four times in recent weeks, denied that the Nobel peace laureate had been on a hunger strike but had only refused food parcels since August 16.

"She did not refuse the food parcels for her own interest but for the sake of the people, to help them obtain their rights and uphold the law," said Kyi Win, speaking at his Yangon office.

Yangon  - Ibrahim Gambari, UN special envoy to Myanmar, visited the compound of detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi Friday but she did not come out to greet him, witnesses said.

Gambari, who arrived in Yangon Monday, went to Suu Kyi's Yangon home at 7:30 am (0100 GMT) and waited at the front gate for an hour but the Nobel Peace Prize laureate did not come out, witnesses said.

The road outside Suu Kyi's compound has been heavily barricaded since Thursday evening with four police officers posted outside its front gate.

Singapore - Myanmar has indicated that opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi could be freed in six months, because current laws limit her maximum detention period to six years, news reports said Monday.

Singapore Foreign Minister George Yeo said that his Myanmar counterpart, Nyan Win, said that Suu Kyi has "about half a year's time left," according to The Straits Times.

When asked if this meant that the Myanmar opposition leader and Nobel Prize winner would be released, Yeo said, "I think that is not an inaccurate inference."
