Man of Iron director Andrzej Wajda to make new Walesa filmBerlin - Legendary Polish filmmaker Andrzej Wajda, who chronicled the rise of the Solidarity movement headed by Lech Walesa in an award-winning film almost 30 years ago, plans to return to the subject in a new movie.

Speaking at a Berlin Film Festival press conference Friday marking the premiere of his latest film Sweet Rush (Tatarak), Wajda said he wanted to set the record straight about Walesa, who he said has been the subject of "rumours and lies."

Losses of up to 2.8 billion euros recorded at German bank Berlin  - Hamburg-based HSH Nordbank registered a preliminary loss of 2.8 billion euros (3.6 billion dollars) for the year 2008, bank officials said Friday.

The bank, run by the states of Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein, wrote down 1.6 billion euros in losses for 2008.

Additionally, it has to shoulder an extra 1.4 billion euros to cover the risks associated with its credit business.

German lower house approves new stimulus package

Germany FlagBerlin - Germany's lower house of parliament on Friday approved a record 50-billion-euro (65 billion dollars) stimulus package aimed at helping the country fight its way out of recession.

The measure passed easily because Chancellor Angela Merkel's grand coalition enjoys a comfortable majority, but it could run into trouble next week in the upper house where the government does not have a majority.

Opposition Free Democrat (FDP) leader Guido Westerwelle called the package disappointing and ineffective, and said it would saddle the nation with a huge debt.

Cambodian-born cellist in Germany owes life to musicBerlin  - The career of cellist Sonny Thet, who owes his life to music, has royal roots. Born in 1954 in the kingdom of Cambodia, he was sent at age 15 by Prince Norodom Sihanouk, then Cambodia's head of state, to the East German city of Weimar for musical studies.

Thet became more than just a good student. He founded the music group Bayon, which went on to fame in communist East Germany.
