Tata Motors Had To Bow Its Head before the Violent Protest at Singur on the Issue of NanoThe Tata Motor’s of India had appealed in Supreme Court on the issue of the land the company bought to prepare its manufacturing unit of Nano car. The government of West Bengal had asked the leading car manufacturer of the country to return the land to the farmers of Singur. The unit was half built and the project was stopped half way, which was further deserted by protesters.

The state legislature claimed that the farmers who did not take compensation from the Company on giving away their land will be getting their land back. On the other hand, Tata Motors opposed the law and had appealed to stop the process and claimed that the state government should not return the land until and unless the Supreme Court declared their final decision on the issue.

The Company had planned an investment of 350 million in the plant at Singur, near the state capital Kolkata, which was to produce world's cheapest car. But the firm pulled out in October 2008 -- even though the plant was 90 percent complete -- after violent protests by the state opposition party and farmers who claimed that their land had been stolen. Tata Motors shifted the project to western Gujarat and launched the car in 2009.
