Taiwan announces three days of mourning for typhoon victims
Taipei - Taiwan will hold three days of mourning for the people killed in floods and landslides caused by Typhoon Morakot, the cabinet said Thursday.
From Saturday until Monday, national flags at all government buildings will fly at half mast in memory of those killed in the typhoon disaster.
Typhoon Morakot slammed into Taiwan on August 8, triggering floods and mudslides in southern Taiwan and destroying three mountain villages.
The official casualty list is 136 dead, 386 missing and 45 injured, but the death toll is expected to rise because in the village of Hsioalin 466 people remain missing, believed to be buried under 3 to 10 metres of mud. (dpa)
