Surgical stockings not very helpful
Recent study revealed that surgical stockings are not as useful as they are claimed to be. It is assumed that these stockings decrease stroke patients' risk of developing blood clots.
Study showed that these stockings do not cut risk of developing clots however tight thigh-high stockings accelerates skin breaks, ulcers and blisters.
Researchers studied data collected from 2,500 stroke patients in the UK, Italy and Australia. Data analysis revealed that nearly 10 percent of patients who wore the tight stockings suffered blood clots. This number was same as compared to those who didn’t wear the stockings.
Researchers also found that 5 percent of patients who wore the tight socks developed skin blisters, ulcers or dead skin tissue.
Lead researcher Professor Martin Dennis said: "The guidelines on the use of these stockings have been based on evidence collected in surgical patients and not in stroke patients."
"We have shown conclusively that compression stockings do not work for stroke patients."
