Surgery could rescue migraine patients from severe headaches
Recent research indicated that surgery could help people suffering from migraine headaches. The surgery of "trigger sites" can either completely cure migraine headaches or reduce frequency and intensity of such headaches.
Presently, 30 million Americans suffer from migraine headaches.
79 migraine sufferers were followed for at least five years for the recent study.
These study subjects have undergone surgery of migraine "trigger sites". Out of these 10 patients had to undergo additional surgeries for newly detected trigger sites. Hence their data was not added to the final data analysis.
61 out of 69 patients were responding positively to the surgery. The migraine headaches of 20 patients were cured completely, whereas 41 patients reported significant decrease in headaches. Eight patients reported less than 50 percent improvement or no change in their migraine headaches.
Bahman Guyuron, MD, Chairman of Plastic Surgery at University Hospitals Case Medical Center and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine said: "Migraine headaches are extremely disabling and this surgical option offers hope for migraine sufferers. Combined with the previous studies, this new five-year data has provided strong evidence that severe migraine headaches and their painful symptoms can be successfully treated with surgery with lasting results."
