Surgeon General Vivek Murthy teams up with Elmo to promote vaccinations

Surgeon General of the United States Dr. Vivek H. Murthy and the Department of Health and Human Services have joined forces with Elmo, Muppet character on the children's television show Sesame Street, to help children in the United States directly receive vaccinations.

On Friday, Murthy revealed a 30-second public service announcement with Elmo in a blog post published on the Department of Health and Human Services website. In the YouTube video, Murthy and the Muppet character tell children about the importance of getting their vaccinations on time.

In the video, the furry red monster with a falsetto voice, Elmo, could be seen expressing concern over getting shots. Murthy tells Elmo not to worry because it will be just a little pinch. Murthy also said the shots are safe and very important to children.

The young monster admits to Murthy, "I was worried about getting a shot. Why does everyone need a vaccination, anyway?" In response, Murthy asked a question to Elmo. He asked if the young monster carries an umbrella when it rains and wear a helmet while riding a tricycle. Elmo replied as 'yes'.

Murthy explained that like an umbrella or a helmet act as protection, vaccines help protect people from germs. According to Elmo, despite being afraid at first that the shot would hurt, the character found that singing a little song helped him get through it.

Murthy told Elmo to tell all of his friends on Sesame Street to get vaccinated. The video has been released as part of collaboration with Sesame Street and the Department of Health and Human Services. The video was produced by the Daily Dot. According to reports, video will encourage children to get their vaccinations.
