Kabul - A suicide bomber attacked an Afghan army vehicle in a relatively peaceful western province on Wednesday, killing two army soldiers and wounding three others, defence ministry said.

The bomber, who also died in the attack, targeted the military vehicle in Mir Daoud area of Herat city, the capital for the province of the same name on Wednesday morning, the defence ministry said in a statement.

The wounded soldiers were evacuated to the provincial hospital, where one of them was reported to be in critical condition, the statement said.

Compared to southern and eastern regions, the main heartlands for the Taliban insurgents, Herat province is relatively peaceful and suffers from periodic attacks carried out by militants penetrating the area from the neighboring provinces.

No group took responsibility for the Wednesday's blast. Taliban militants, who were driven out of power in late 2001, carried out more than 120 suicide bombings in 2008, officials said.

In a suicide attack near German embassy in Kabul city on Saturday four Afghan citizens and one US soldier were killed and dozens more including a German diplomat were wounded. (dpa)
