Study testifies soothing effect of tea in times of stress

Study testifies soothing effect of tea in times of stress People often take a tea break to manage stress at home as well as office. It is a common belief that a cup of tea has calming effect on the person. The recent study has given scientific data to prove that tea can help a person in coping with stress to some extent.

Research also found that not only the ingredients of tea but also the idea of putting a kettle to make tea helps in calming down. The research team led by psychologist Dr Malcolm Cross at City University, London, confirmed that making a brew can give a lift when one is upset or anxious.

Research team conducted an experiment to study effect of tea on stress. Volunteers were placed in a stressful scenario. Some study subjects were given tea immediately after the stressful situation. It was found that study subjects given tea showed a four per cent reduction in stress whereas those not given tea showed a 25 per cent increase in anxiety.

Psychologist Dr Malcolm Cross, of City University London, said that the ritual of making and drinking tea - particularly during times of stress - is at the very core of British culture.

He added: "This study shows that the social psychological aspects of tea enhance the effects of its chemical make-up on our bodies and brains."
