Strike at Budapest airport lifted, but unions threaten more action
Budapest - Unions called off a strike at Budapest's Ferihegy international airport Wednesday, but had yet to reach a compromise with airport management in a dispute over terms and conditions.
Passengers were faced with delays on Monday afternoon when two unions representing ground staff announced the resumption of a strike that had been suspended after
12 days on December 22.
The airport operator Budapest Airport managed to avoid cancellations by closing one terminal and moving all flights to the other two terminals of Hungary's only major international airport.
It could take up to two days for normal service to resume, an airport spokesman said on Wednesday morning after the strike was lifted.
Strike leaders have pledged to continue with their industrial action. Attila Csorba, head of one of the striking unions, told the local news agency MTI that there will be repeated walkouts at short notice until workers' demands are met.
Airport management responded with a statement in which called this strategy "cynical and irresponsible".
Unions are demanding that Budapest Airport abandon restructuring plans, extend an earlier collective work contract, and pledge that there will be no job cuts before 2010. (dpa)
