State Rep. Robert Bentley set to be Republican nominee for Alabama governorAccording to the official reports, State Rep. Robert Bentley was headed for victory on Tuesday in a runoff to determine the Republican nominee for Alabama governor in the November election.

The Montgomery Advertiser has reported that with 96 percent of precincts reporting, Bentley had 56 percent of the vote to 44 percent for former two-year college Chancellor Bradley Byrne. Bentley and Byrne nosed out five other Republicans in a June 1 primary race.

It has further been reported that Bentley will face the Democratic nominee, Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks, in November.

In the runoff to determine who will run in November against incumbent Democratic Rep. Bobby Bright, Montgomery City Councilwoman Martha Roby, a favorite of Washington It was also reported that republicans had 60 percent of the vote to 40 percent for Tea Party activist Rick Barber, with 95 percent of precincts reporting. Barber made national headlines for television ads comparing the U. S. tax system to the Auschwitz death camps and American slavery.

The Advertiser further said that Roby said one of the first actions she'd take if elected in November would be to cast a vote to remove Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., as House speaker.

WBRC-TV, Birmingham, has reported that both parties held runoff races in the state's 7th Congressional District to succeed Rep. Artur Davis, who announced he was leaving politics at the end of his term.

The report also noted that Birmingham attorney Terri Sewell held a comfortable lead over Jefferson County Commissioner Shelia Smoot in the Democratic race. With 95 percent of precincts reporting Sewell had 55 percent of the vote to 45 percent for Smoot, and appeared headed for a general election contest with the winner of the Republican runoff between Don Chamberlin and Chris Salter.
