Starting January 1, California Restaurants Prohibited to Use Trans Fat

Starting January 1, California Restaurants Prohibited to Use Trans FatAs a part of the ongoing series of new state laws that will be effective starting January 1, the state of California will prohibit restaurants from cooking dishes using trans fat, making it the first state to pull back the use of ingredients and substances related to clogged arteries, strokes and coronary heart disease.

The ban is being looked at by supporters as a way to make sure that diners, who have not been routinely aware of consuming trans fat at some of their frequented restaurants, are protected. Also, people who are not aware of the way meals they consume are cooked or of the ingredients that are used will also be protected.

"Consumers should rejoice because they can actually take family and friends out to eat and not worry about whether food will be cooked in trans fat", said Assemblyman Tony Mendoza, D-Artesia, who proposed the ban.

The measure was signed in 2008 by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, but it will take effect starting New Year's Day as restaurants were given a year of adjustment period.

Bakeries, on the other hand, do not have to comply with the new rule till January 2011.
