Sony to cut 8,000 jobs worldwideTokyo  - Japanese electronics giant Sony Corp announced Tuesday plans to cut 8,000 jobs worldwide as a result of the global economic crisis.

The world's second-largest maker of consumer electronics hopes to save more than 100 billion yen (1.1 billion dollars) by the measure, which affects about 4 per cent of its
160,000-strong global workforce.

The job cuts, which go with plans to scale back investments and pull out of some business sectors, will be made at the beginning of the next business year on April 1, 2009, the company said.

The producer of PlayStation is set to cut investment in the ailing electronics sector by 30 per cent.

Sony recently dramatically lowered its profit forecasts for the current fiscal year through March 2009. (dpa)
