Sergey Brin criticizes forces against open Internet

Sergey Brin criticizes forces against open InternetSergey Brin, the co-founder of Google has expressed criticism over what he describes as the powerful forces working against the open internet from across the world.

He pointed out that the Google search engine was build at a time when the internet was free. However, he claimed that a similar search service cannot be created today due to opposite forces including government censorship and interception of data, excessive attempts to protect intellectual property, and new corporate-controlled communication portals.

"They are very powerful forces that have lined up against the open internet on all sides and around the world. I thought there was no way to put the genie back in the bottle, but now it seems in certain areas the genie has been put back in the bottle," says Brin in an interview to a British media publication.

He said that censorship by government in China as well as other countries which are trying to imitate the company along with entertainment industry's attempts to restrict the flow of information online has worked against the concept of open internet. He also blamed what he calls "restrictive" practices of Facebook and Apple for hurting openness of the internet.
