Thousands of baby pigs gathered on a highway in the southwest Ohio community after a semi-trailer carrying them crashed.

WXIX reported that the accident took place at 7 p.m. local time on Monday on State Route 35, east of Dayton.

The station reported that two people were inside the truck at the time of the crash and were later taken to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

It was told that several police and fire officials from nearby areas were trying hard to collect the piglets that scattered into a wooded area by the site of the road.

The animals that were rounded up were then taken to nearby fairgrounds to be given water. The truck carrying piglets was heading towards Indiana from South Carolina, reported WXIX.

WLWT reported that between 300 and 500 piglets were killed in the crash. It was further told that approximately 1,500 of the survivors were recaptured.

Police officials dealing with the issue said they were worried that the scattered piglets might attract hungry coyotes.

A short video of the incident posted online by the local Fox television station showed rescue workers trying to secure the squealing piglets, holding them by the hind legs and passing them into another truck.

Several agencies and volunteers worked to corral the animals after the crash Monday night on U.S. Route 35 in Xenia Township, near Dayton.

So far there was no information on what caused the accident. But it was later told that the driver of the semitrailer lost control and slammed into a guardrail.
