Saudi Arabia Boy who swallowed bobby pin recovers without further complications
Kids can put anything in their mouths, and generally this doesn't cause serious harm. But the case was not same for a 4-year-old Saudi Arabia boy. According to a new report of the boy’s case, he swallowed a bobby pin that resulted into a perforated intestine, a pierced kidney and undergone a surgery to fix it all.
The doctors, who carried out the treatment of the boy and wrote the report of his case, said that a medical team has conducted an operation to remove the pin, and following it the boy has recovered without further complications.
Dr Yasmin Abdulaziz Yousef, of the department of surgery at KAMC-JD, National Guard Health Affairs in Jeddah, who treated the boy and co-authored the report of his case, said, “Children actually start exploring the world using their mouth as soon as they are able to pick up objects”. She added that serious complications due to swallowed objects are rare as objects generally ‘pass through the gastrointestinal tract, ending up in the diaper.
She mentioned that the problems arise when the swallowed object is thin and sharp, like pins, nails and fish bones, or when the little ones swallow disk batteries or magnets. While talking to Live Science, Yousef said that these have a higher risk of causing perforations and other fatal complications.
