Salmonella Outbreak kills One More, Sickens Hundreds

On Wednesday, Federal and Texas health officials reported one more fatality linked to tainted cucumber imports. The officials said that more than 300 people are sickened by the outbreak, which is reported in 30 US states.

While providing information on the latest fatality, the Texas Department of State Health Services said the victim was a patient from Texas who was suffering from some serious underlying health conditions. Before the latest fatality, a Californian patient had died earlier after becoming infected with a strain of Salmonella Poona.

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said that since July 3, about 70 individuals visited hospitals due to the strain. The outbreak is attacking young people the most as over 50% of the sickened people by the outbreak are younger than 18, according to the CDC.

The CDC said, “The outbreak stemmed from tainted cucumbers that were imported from Mexico and distributed by the San Diego-based Andrew and Williamson Fresh Produce company”.

In a recent statement, the company announced that it has released orders to recall all cucumbers sold under the Limited Edition brand label from August 1 through September 3. The cucumbers were distributed in more than 20 US states, ranging from Alaska to New Jersey, as per the company. It also said that only cucumbers have been recalled, and other vegetables and fruits are not part of the recall.
