Saladino crashes out in long jump
Berlin - World and Olympic champion Irving Saladino of Panama crashed out of the long jump final at the world championships when he fouled three times.
Saladino overstepped the takeoff board on each attempt in the 12-man final which meant that he didn't reach the deciding three rounds of the best eight jumpers.
The long jump got special attention in Berlin because the descendents of American icon Jesse Owens and his friendly German rival Luz Long were to present the medals.
Owens famously won four golds at the politically charged 1936 Olympics in the same stadium. He won the long jump after Long gave him some advice on the approach after Owens had fouled twice.
Saladino had no German to help him because European indoor champion Sebastian Bayer and the others failed to make the final. (dpa)
