Russian rocket falls into the Pacific Ocean following launch

Russian rocket falls into the Pacific Ocean following launchA Russian rocket, which strayed from its desired flight trajectory, fell into the Pacific Ocean immediately after its launch on Friday.

The Zenit-3SL rocket, which was carrying a US-made communications satellite, was launched from a floating site in the ocean on Friday. Reports suggest that the rocket went out of way and engine cut power, causing it to fall into the ocean. Officials indicated that no one was injured at the Odyssey platform, from where the rocket was launched into the sky.

Vitaly Lopota, the head of Energia Corporation, which makes the Zenit-3SL rocket, said that company has formed a panel to investigate the cause of the crash. Lopota said that the rocket fell into the ocean just one minute after its launch from the launch platform.

"We had an abnormal situation -- the emergency shutdown of the first stage engine. It happened 50 seconds into the flight. We are now looking into what happened," said Lopota, while speaking to a Russian media agency.

Sea Launch consortium has said that the Intelsat 27 satellite was lost after less than a minute of the launch of the rocket. The company has used Pacific Ocean platform to perform commercial launches since 1999 and has recorded two complete failures out of the 34 missions until the latest launch of Friday.
