Russian Man suffering from Muscle Wasting Disease to Undergo Human Head Transplant Surgery

A 30-year-old computer scientist from Russia is the first man who will undergo the world's first complete head transplant. The surgery would be carried out by Dr Sergio Canavero on Valery Spiridonov, who is suffering from a severe muscle wasting disease.

Spiridonov confessed that the whole idea of the surgery is terrifying for him. But he does not have many options and if he does not try this choice then he might repent later. With passage of time, his health is deteriorating.

Spiridonov, who is suffering from the rare genetic Werdnig-Hoffman muscle wasting disease, said that his decision to undergo the surgery is final and has no plans to change it.

Dr Canavero shared that he has received many emails and letters from people who were interested in undergoing the surgery. But he has already decided that the first patients would be someone who will be suffering from a muscle wasting disease.

Chinese scientists have carried out a head transplant on a mouse. Owing to which, there are some models for the procedure. But majority of experts affirmed that a human head transplant is a complete unexplored thing.

Dr. Canavero revealed as to how he would carry out the procedure on Spiridonov. He told that the first thing he has to do is to cool both the body and head, so that the cells would not die when they are deprived of oxygen during the process.

In the next phase, the neck of patient will be cut and all the important blood vessels will be hooked up to tubes. Meanwhile, the spinal cord on head and the body will be severed. The next step would be move the recipient's head onto the donor's body and the two ends of the spinal cord are joined together.

Last stage of this lengthy surgery would be stitch up the muscles and blood supply.
