Research team finds earth quake scars in the central Himalayas
A new research has found that powerful earthquakes have left clear ground scars in the central Himalayas and this could have huge implications for the area.
A research team led by Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore said that the area could see massive earthquakes of the magnitude 8 to 8.5 on the Richter scale. They also warned that their areas where the surface is not broken by the earthquakes are at risk.
The research has high importance as the area has a population that is similar to that of the New York City, the researchers said in a statement. They also said that evidence that there were such severe quakes happened indicates that similar earth quakes could happen in the future.
They said that the study showed that two great earthquakes in 1255 and 1934 left scars in the central Himalayas. This is contrary to what was earlier believed by the scientific community. They said that using new high resolution imagery and state of the art dating techniques, they were able to discover the rupture caused by the 1934 earthquake on the surface over a length of more than 150 km in the region.
It was believed that earthquakes of 1897, 1905, 1934 and 1950 did not rapture the earth's surface. However, the new study showed that some of these earthquakes indeed caused raptures.
