Research in Motion opens “BlackBerry App World”
The manufacturer of BlackBerry phones, Research in Motion (RIM) has opened its one-stop application store, officially called BlackBerry App World, today. The RIM has declared that the BlackBerry App World is open for the BlackBerry users.
Jim Balsillie, the BlackBerry Co-Chief Executive, has stated that the BlackBerry App World is set to be available for application download for the BlackBerry users, starting at midday.
According to RIM, the BlackBerry App World allows the BlackBerry users to browse, purchase and download apps directly from it. The BlackBerry owners can visit mobile.blackberry.com or www.blackberry.com/appworld from the BlackBerry Browser to download the storefront. Once downloading is done, the BlackBerry App World icon appears on the BlackBerry phone’s screen.
The users need to set up a PayPal account before purchasing applications from the BlackBerry App World. The BlackBerry apps are available either free, or $2.99 or above. The featured apps are displayed daily on the App World homescreen. The users can choose their apps from different categories, including Games, Music and Video, News and Weather, etc.
Some of the featured apps in the initial BlackBerry App World (literature) include PrimeTime2Go – a service helps to download TV programs onto BlackBerry phones, The New York Times, Oregon Trail – a classic educational game, Bloomberg News, WorldMate Live – a travel-management app, MySpace, Facebook, Pandora, Slacker, Ticketmaster, Google Maps, Viigo – an RSS reader and information app, Brain Challenge – a puzzle game, and Uno – a classic card game.
According to Jim Balsillie, in the BlackBerry App World, the revenue will be shared with cell phone carriers, and the BlackBerry App World will allow the cell phone carriers to set their profiles and their own stores-within-the-store. Thus, the business model of RIM’s BlackBerry App World differs from Apple’s App Store where Apple gets commissions fro app developers.
The Waterloo, Ontario-based Research in Motion has reported that offering an easy way for the BlackBerry users to download new applications for their BlackBerry devices, the BlackBerry App World is set to offer a thousand applications at launch. The BlackBerry users can download application from the new store at mobile.blackberry.com or blackberry.com/appworld.
