Giffords is still recovering from a bullet wound suffered nearly four months ago at a January constituent event near Tucson. A gunman had shot her in the head more than four months ago and doctors had to remove a piece of skull to relieve pressure on her brain.

She is recovering at TIRR Memorial Hermann hospital in Houston. Her doctors and friends have been telling the media about her making strong recovery and she has begun to speak in short sentences.

The doctors put a plastic implant in place to fully cover her brain, said a statement from TIRR Memorial Hermann hospital. Giffords is "recovering well after her surgery today," the statement added.
