Renuka Chowdhury proposes child friendly logo for Industry

Renuka ChowdhuryNew Delhi, Dec 11 : Union Minister for Women and Child Development Renuka Chowdhury today proposed a child friendly logo for industry, declaring that the child labour has not been used in any form at any stage of manufacturing or production of goods.

Speaking at the National convention on Right to Education and abolition of Child Labour organized by National Child Rights Commission in collaboration with UNICEF here, Chowdhury said the proposed logo would give competitive advantage to Indian industry at international level.

Advocating stringent punishment for employer of child labour, Chowdhury said that if required exclusive policy and act should be made to check all kind of exploitation of children. An inclusive definition of child labour must not make an artificial distinction between hazardous and not hazardous work and if need labour laws should be reviewed to cover all forms of work that children are engaged including agriculture and allied activities.

She said that the Ministry would like to redefine the child in various legislations to include all children up to 18 years in consonance with Juvenile Justice Act.

Emphasizing over right of education of children, Chowdhury said that an educated and well-informed child could take better decision about his life and fight for his or her rights.

Complaining about the lack of educational opportunities for girl child, sh said we have to collectively work to change the mindset so that all girls could be sent to the schools instead of routinely engaging them in fetching water bringing fuel wood and caring for siblings.

The two-day national consultation will discuss various issues concerning abolition of child labour and Right to Education. It is being attended experts from various sectors-labour, education, women and child and social welfare both from Government non-government sectors. (ANI)
