Seven injured in blast during Yemen protest

yemenSana'a - At least seven people were injured, two of them critically, when a hand grenade exploded while police were dispersing protestors in south Yemen on Monday, security sources said.

The assailant threw the grenade while police were trying to break up a peaceful protest against rising prices in the southern province of Dhali, according to the sources.

A policeman was among the wounded, the sources said, adding that the assailant was arrested.

In the port city of Aden police rounded up scores of political activists and journalists ahead of a protest to mark the first anniversary of demonstrations in demand of more rights for the south.

Yemen appeal court wraps up al-Banna trial, verdict in October

yemenSana'a, Yemen - A Yemeni court of appeals concluded on Saturday its hearings into the terrorism charges against US citizen of Yemeni origin Jaber al-Banna, and said it would deliver its verdict on October 11.

The court held a wrap-up hearing, in which prosecutors and defence lawyers presented their final arguments.

Chief prosecutor Saeed al-Aaqil asked the court to confirm the 10- year jail term against al-Banna, who is wanted by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on terrorism charges.

Amran, Yemen - A Yemeni court on Saturday sentenced to death a man who killed ten people in a shooting rampage outside a mosque in north-western Yemen on May 30.

Abdullah Saleh al-Kohali, 26, confessed to the crime during the trial in Amran, some 70 kilometres north of the capital Sana'a.

When the trial began on June 8, he said he intended to avenge his honour by killing a man sexually involved with his sister. He said the main target of his shooting was a fellow clansman identified as Belal Qassim al-Kohali.

"He got my sister pregnant three times," the defendant said.
