Myanmar journalist gets two years for covering cyclone protest

Mayanmar MapYangon - A young female journalist who attempted to cover a protest by a group of Myanmar's Cyclone Nargis victims was sentenced to two years in prison Friday, legal sources confirmed.

Eine Khaing Oo, 21, was arrested on June 10 when she tried to cover a rare protest in front of the head office of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Yangon by a group of Nargis-victims from South Dagon Township, a new satellite town for the poor.

Tamwe Township Court found Eine Khaing Oo undermining national security.

She had worked as a junior reporter for Eco Vision magazine for two weeks prior to her detention, media sources said.

Myanmar activists, bloggers get stiff jail terms

Yangon - Fourteen Myanmar activists who participated in last year's Saffron Revolution were sentenced to 65 years in jail each on Tuesday, a non-governmental organization said.

The sentences were handed down to the 14 activists, all well-known members of the 88 Generation Students Group, at 1 pm in Insein Prison Special Court, said the Assistance Association for Political Prionsers.

Among those sentenced were the group's leader Mie Mie and her husband Jimmy, Min Zayya, Zaw Zaw Min, Than Tin, Zayya, Ant Bwe Kyaw, Kyaw Kyaw Htwe, Marky, Pannate Tun, Thet Zaw, Mar Mar Oo, Sandar Min and Thet Thet Aung. The 88 Generation Students Group is an activist group established during 1988 anti-government demonstrations.

Nay Myo Kyaw, who was better known by his blogger alias Nay Phone Latt, was on Monday sentenced to 20 years and six months in jail by the Insein Prison Special Court in Yangon.

Myanmar rejects Bangladesh's call to stop oil explorationYangon - Myanmar has rejected a demand by Bangladesh to stop offshore oil exploration in a disputed area in the Bay of Bengal, state media reports said Friday.

The Myanmar government announced it would continue exploration in the Rakhaing offshore block AD-7 despite Bangladesh's claim to the area, according to state-run TV and newspapers.

Myanmar claimed the AD-7 block was within the special economic zone of Myanmar territorial waters and that the demand by Bangladesh was unlawful and wrong.

Myanmar bomb victim was former Buddhist monk, claims state media

Yangon - Myanmar's state media on Tuesday blamed a bomb blast that killed a 26-year-old man over the weekend on the victim himself, described as a former Buddhist monk who had participated in the September 2007, "saffron revolution."

Thet Oo Win died in a bomb explosion at his home in Shwepyitha township in Yangon at 5:30 pm on Sunday.

A police investigation into the incident found various bomb-making paraphernalia including a 9-volt dry cell battery fastened with a wire, a damaged pieces of lithium battery, six electric detonators and ammonium nitrates at the victim's home, claimed The New Light of Myanmar, a military mouthpiece.
