The trend, called "sickness presence", is becoming increasingly common as staff fear for their jobs during the recession.
In order to study the long-term impact of the behaviour, researchers randomly selected almost 12,000 Danes of working age, who had been in continuous employment for at least a year.

He filed the papers last Friday, Extra first reported.
The 48-year-old actor initially filed for divorce in December 2007. However, the petition was later dismissed. Three days later, Wright Penn, 43, filed her own paperwork. But in April 2008, the couple''s divorce petition was dismissed at their request.
The couple has two children together, daughter Dylan Frances, 18, and son Hopper Jack, 15, reports Us magazine.
Washington - The US Congress on Wednesday approved President Barack Obama's 3.56-billion-dollar budget prescriptions for 2010 along strictly party lines.
The Senate voted 53-43 and the House of Representative 233-193 for the non-binding resolution, which sets out the framework for Congress to consider Obama's legislative priorities, including tax cuts for the middle class and an expansion of social spending in health care, energy and education.
Washington - The US economy appears to be contracting at a slower rate than in previous weeks in a sign that it is beginning to stabilize, the US Federal Reserve said Wednesday.
But the Federal Reserve warned that economic activity is likely to remain "weak for a time" and decided to keep the interest rate unchanged at 0-0.25 per cent from its last meeting in March.
The Federal Reserve meeting came hours after the US Commerce Department issued its quarterly report showing the economy continued to shrink during the first three months of the year.
