Prachanda meets Ban Ki-moon

New York, Sept 28 : Nepal Prime Minister Prachanda met Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon at the UN Headquarters here on Saturday. 

According to the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations, the UN Secretary General assured of the United Nations'' continued support in the days ahead and expressed his readiness to assist in the socio-economic development in Nepal. 

He also appreciated Nepal''s continued participation in the UN peacekeeping operations while Prachanda reiterated Nepal''s commitment to continue providing troops to UN peacekeeping missions at the call of the UN.

UN condemns string of bombings in India

United Nations, Sep 28 : UN chief Ban Ki-moonUN chief Ban Ki-moon has strongly condemned the recent string of bombings targeting civilians in India, and reiterated that nothing justifies resort to terrorism.

“The Secretary-General is deeply concerned about the string of bombings in a number of cities in India in recent weeks targeting places of high civilian concentration,” his office said in a statement.

Ban’s office cited in particular Saturday’s blast in Mehrauli in New Delhi in which two were killed and 22 were injured.

Egypt says Israel must be more willing to compromise

New York - Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abdul Gheit Saturday charged that Israel showed too little willingness to compromise in the peace process with the Palestinians.

Egypt calls for Darfur conference, Syria opposes legal action

New York - The year-long crisis in Darfur was discussed Saturday by the foreign ministers of Egypt and Syria in their speeches at the annual UN General Assembly.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit called for an international conference to draft a roadmap for the way to unity and stability in Sudan.

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Al-Moualem demanded that the UN Security Council counteract an arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir that has been requested by the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court.

The prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo asked the ICC at The Hague in July to issue a warrant to arrest al-Bashir for the killing of Darfurians.

Lavrov wants new European security treaty after Georgia conflict

New York - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei LavrovRussian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov Saturday told the UN General Assembly that the European security infrastructure had failed in "recent events" and called for a new Europe-wide security treaty.

Lavrov said that in the conflict in the Caucasus, the "existing architecture of security in Europe did not pass the strength test in recent events."

Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Pak Kil Yon denounced the US as "the worst peace breaker and human rights violator in the world" as evidenced by US invasions of sovereign countries and massacre of innocent people, a reference to Iraq and Afghanistan.
