Thailand to repatriate 5,500 Hmong to Laos Bangkok - Thailand agreed Wednesday to repatriate 5,400 ethnic Hmong living in a Thai refugee camp since 2004 to neighbouring Laos within the year, state media reports said.

Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya told a press conference in Luang Prabang, Laos' ancient capital, that Thailand would pay 1.5 million baht (42,860 dollars) to the Lao government to help finance buildings at a village outside the current capital of Vientiane to receive the repatriated Hmong, the Thai News Agency reported.

Thai army pursues suspected Muslim rebel leader Pattani, Thailand - The military on Wednesday deployed hundreds of soldiers and police to capture a suspected key leader of the separatist insurgency in southern Thailand.

The operation to capture Masoleh Dellamah was launched on the outskirts of Pattani, 680 kilometres south of Bangkok, but after a clash, Masoleh and his followers managed to escape into a nearby jungle, authorities said.

Reinforcements and helicopters were called in to help track down the insurgents.

The joint research programme will investigate variability of the monsoon in the Indian Ocean and China and its likely impact on rice- growing in China, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, The Nation newspaper reported.

Thailand mulls 400-million-dollar loan from China Bangkok  - Thailand plans to request a 400-million-dollar loan from the China Exim Bank as part of its efforts to stimulate the economy which expected to shrink at least 3 per cent this year, media reports and officials said Wednesday.

The loan request is to be submitted to Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jieshi, who was scheduled to meet Wednesday with Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and his Thai counterpart Kasit Piromya, The Nation newspaper reported.

China's Chery mulls production in Thailand Bangkok - China's Chery Automobile is mulling a production base in Thailand for right-hand-drive vehicles for the domestic and export markets, media reports said Tuesday.

"Thailand is an important market for us and a very viable location for a production site, due to the infrastructure and skilled labour," Chery Vice President Zhou Biren told The Nation newspaper.

Chery currently sells cars in Thailand through local partner Thai Chery Yarnyon.
