Karunanidhi reiterates his demand of ceasefire between Sri Lankan forces and LTTE

Coimbatore/Chennai, Nov 16 : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Muthuvel Karunanidhi on Sunday reiterated his demand of ceasefire between the Sri Lankan forces and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

Sri Lanakan President Mahinda Rajapakse on November 13 in New Delhi ruled out any possibility of ceasefire till the rebels laid down their arms.

The Tigers say they are fighting to establish a separate homeland for Sri Lanka''s Tamil minority, which has complained of marginalisation by successive governments led by the Sinhalese majority since independence from Britain in 1948.

Tamil television artists express solidarity with Sri Lankan Tamils

Chennai, Nov 9 : Television artists of Tamil Nadu observed hunger strike on Sunday to demonstrate solidarity with the Sri Lankan Tamils being allegedly killed by the island nation''s defence forces.

More than 500 actors and artists took part in a hunger strike in Chennai by the television and small screen Artists Association of the state.

The escalating conflict in northern Sri Lanka between government troops and Tamil Tigers has roiled Indian politics.

Many parliamentarians from Tamil Nadu have threatened to resign from the Parliament in protest against the alleged inaction on the part of the Central government to stop government offensive against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in Sri Lanka.

82 kilogram laddu for Advani on his 82nd birthday

BJP - AdvaniCoimbatore (Tamil Nadu), Nov. 8 : Activists of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will celebrate the 82nd birthday of senior party leader L K Advani by preparing a laddu weighing 82 kilograms.

Advani turned 82 on Saturday.

According to party sources, the laddu will be made from 40 kilograms of sugar, 30 kilograms of groundnut powder and 10 kilograms of dry fruits and ghee or clarified butter.

The four feet high laddu has been kept on the party premises and will be distributed to the public today.

Tamil Nadu forest officials rescue trapped leopardCoonoor (Tamil Nadu), Nov 8: Forest officials in Tamil Nadu’s Coonoor town have rescued a trapped leopard and released the big cat into the wilds.

Officials said farmers trapped the leopard, which had strayed into their fields on Thursday.

"On Thursday our officials near the north forest division of Coonoor were informed by the local residents that a leopard had entered their area. We were able to track the leopard, which was caught in a trap placed by a farmer on Friday,” said R. Kannan, Conservator of Forests, southern Coimbatore division.
