80 per cent in Taiwan favour maintaining status quo with China

Taipei & ChinaTaipei- The majority of the people of Taiwan favor maintaining Taiwan's status quo with China and are satisfied with Taipei's policy seeking peace with Beijing, an opinion poll showed Thursday.

According to the poll of 1,094 people conducted by the government's Mainland Affairs Council, more than 80 per cent want to keep the status quo with China, the same percentage as in previous polls.

Taiwan confirms purchase of 60 Harpoon missiles from US Taipei  - Taiwan confirmed on Wednesday that the United States has decided to sell 60 Harpoon Air Launch anti-ship missiles to Taipei, in a move ending a de facto freeze on US arms sales to the island.

Defence Ministry Spokeswoman Chih Yu-lan told the Central News Agency (CNA) that Taipei made the request to buy the missiles, worth 90 million US dollars, in 2007, and delivery was scheduled for 2009.

Ma Ying-jeouTaipei- Taiwan's President Ma Ying-jeou Tuesday urged the country, which did poorly at the Beijing Olympics, to learn from South Korea in training its athletes.

Ma praised Taiwan's athletes for trying their best at the August 8 8-24 Beijing Olympics.

"But sports reflects a country's power. South Korea, whose population is similar to Taiwan's population, did extremely well at the Beijing Olympics. So we have a long way to go," he said when receiving the Taiwan team.
