Guatemalan and Taiwan pledge to strengthen diplomatic ties

Taiwan, TaipeiTaipei- Guatemalan President Alvaro Colom ended his visit to Taiwan Saturday with the two countries pledging to strengthen diplomatic ties and Taiwan offering more aid to Guatemala.

At the end of his five-day visit, Colom on Saturday held talks with President Ma Ying-jeou and signed a joint communique in which the two leaders pledged to strengthen the seven decades of friendly ties and boost cooperation in all fields.

The statement recounted the cooperation projects agreed upon by both sides, but did not mention the cost of the cooperation projects or amount of new aid.

Taiwan president calls for peace with China in National Day speech

Presiding over the first National Day celebration since his May 20 inauguration, Ma said his pursuing peace and expanding exchanges with China has won support from the international community.

Nestle Taiwan agrees to refund consumers over tainted milk powder

Nestle Milk PowderTaipei- Nestle Taiwan agreed on Thursday to refund consumers after 10 more brands of its China-made milk powder were found to contain small traces of the toxic chemical melamine.

"Beginning today, consumers can ask for refund at the sales outlets where they bought the products before November 30, regardless of whether the containers are already opened and whether they still have the payment receipts or not," the company said in a statement.

It also said consumers can choose to replace the old products with new ones supplied from countries outside China by the beginning of November.

Ex-Major League player Bailey suspended in match-fixing scandal

Cory-BaileyTaipei - Former US Major League baseball player Cory Bailey and two Taiwan players were suspended from games Thursday due to their alleged involvement in match fixing, Taiwan baseball authorities said Thursday.

"If players are involved in match fixing, we will terminate contracts with them and seek damage," Lee Wen-pin, secretary-general of the Chinese Professional Baseball League (PBL), told reporters.

Bailey, 37, has played in US Major and Minor leagues since 2001 and played for Japan's Yomiuri Giants in 2003.

He played for Taiwan's La New team 2004-2005 before returning to play for Chicago Cubs.

Taiwan's former president admits wife wired millions abroad

taiwanTaipei - Taiwan's former president Chen Shui-bian Wednesday admitted that his wife had wired abroad 2 million US dollars, in the latest twist in a snowballing money laundering scandal implicating Chen and his family.

"My wife told me (in January) she still had close to 2 million US dollars in ABN Amro Bank in Singapore that had not been frozen," Chen said after he a court hearing about his alleged role in the scandal.
