More than 4,000 fans to visit Taiwan to see boy band FahrenheitTaipei  - Taiwan has invited more than 4,000 fans from East and South-East Asia to meet the boy band Fahrenheit in Taipei to boost tourism to the island, the Tourism Bureau said Friday.

The 4,200 fans are from Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia and other countries. The get-together, called Wish to See You in Taiwan, is to take place Sunday at the National Taiwan University Gymnasium, the bureau said.

Taiwan government backs Elpida-Taiwan chip makers' merger Taipei  - Taiwan on Wednesday lent its support to the proposed merger of Japan's top producer of computer chips - Elpida Memory Inc - with three Taiwan firms, but said details are still being discussed.

Economics Minister Yin Chi-ming made the statement to the Central News Agency (CNA) after Japanese press reported that Elpida and the three Taiwan chip makers would clink the deal Wednesday.

Taiwan to raise duty on cigarettesTaipei - Taiwan plans to increase the health duty imposed on cigarettes by 10 Taiwan dollars (30 US cents) beginning in March, the health minister said Wednesday.

"Parliament already approved the increase in the health duty from 10 to 20 Taiwan dollars last month, and implementation of the new measure will start im March," said Yeh Chin-chuan, director of the Department of Health.

The average price of cigarettes is to now rise to 65 Taiwan dollars per pack, Yeh said in a news conference in Taipei.

Taiwan mapTaipei - Taiwan's former first lady Wu Shu-chen pleaded guilty Tuesday to money laundering and document forgery charges in a widely watched pretrial hearing at the Taipei District Court.

But she denied more serious embezzlement and bribery charges, saying that to her knowledge, the millions of US dollars in funds she had received were merely political contributions for her husband, Chen Shui-bian, when he was still president.

"I pleaded guilty over the Nankang case and related money laundering," she told Judge Tsai Shou-hsun in a two-and-a-half-hour hearing.

"There is no truth to recently published reports that the South China Morning Post plans to launch a new publication, either in print or online, in Taiwan," the South China Morning Post (SCMP) Group said in a press statement.

It said the group has not appointed anyone to conduct business or negotiate on its behalf with respect to launching a new venture in Taiwan.

According to the Economic Daily News, the South China Morning Post plans to hire several economic and finance experts as it prepares to launch a Taiwan edition.
