Curfew relaxed for five hours in six districts of Kashmir valley

Srinagar, Aug 14 : After two days of aggressive violence leading to more than 20 killings, security forces relaxed curfew in six out of ten districts in the Kashmir Valley for five hours to enable people to buy essential commodities.

The curfew was relaxed in Srinagar, Gandharwal, Budgam, Kupwara, Anantnag and Kulgam districts from 6:00 a. m. to 11:00 a. m, while it was not lifted in Baramula, Bandipura, Pulwama and Shopiyan.

According to state authorities, if relaxation period passed off peacefully then it would be extended.

Kashmir valley was facing shortage of essential commodities for some time as protesters in Jammu had blocked the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, over the issue of land transfer to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB).

Election Commission to review J-K poll preparedness todaySrinagar/New Delhi, Aug 14 : The Election Commission will today review the poll preparedness in Jammu and Kashmir for the state assembly elections, which are expected to be held in sometime in November-December.

The term of the Assembly would expire on November 20.

According to sources, the Election Commission will review the poll preparations with the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of the state.

Protests continue in Delhi on Amarnath land row

New Delhi/Srinagar, Aug 13 : The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) combine on Wednesday began its nationwide protest against the cancellation of land transfer to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) by blocking roads and disrupting train services across the country.

VHP general secretary Pravin Togadia said: "The Centre must give the land to the Amarnath shrine board, otherwise our protest will continue."

VHP activists began their protest in the national capital at about 9 a. m., blocking roads in at least 20 places, including ITO, Moolchand, Dwarka, Pitampura and Deepali Chowk. Vehicles heading to schools and hospitals have been exempted.

Kashmir unrest: Two more killed in Lasjan

Jammu & KashmirSrinagar, Aug 12: Two more protesters were killed in firing by security forces in Lasjan on the outskirts of Srinagar, taking the toll to five in today’s fresh violence during protests against the Jammu and Kashmir Police action on Monday in which a senior Hurriyat Conference leader Sheikh Abdul Aziz was killed.

While three persons were killed and at least eight others injured in the firing in Aribal in Watlab area of Bandipora District, two protesters died and another was wounded as police opened fire in Lasjan on the outskirts of Srinagar, official sources said.
