Filing of nominations for second phase of J&K assembly elections begins

Srinagar, Oct 29: The filing of nominations for the second phase of Jammu and Kashmir assembly polls began today with the issuance of notification.

Four seats in Rajouri and two in Ganderbal district will go to polls in this phase on November 23. The last date for filing nominations is November 5.

The nominations for the first phase in Jammu and Kashmir has started picking up with several political parties finalizing the names of their candidates.

Friday is the last date for the submission of papers for the first phase in which ten assembly constituencies in Bandipora, Leh, Kargil and Poonch districts will go to the polls on November 17.

Separatist shutdown in Kashmir valley to mark United Nations DaySrinagar, Kashmir - Life in India-administered Kashmir came to a halt on Friday in response to a call by the separatist Hurriyat Conference to mark United Nations Day with a strike, police said.

Hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who issued the call for the strike, said the protest was to remind the world body of its "indifference" to Kashmir and that the Kashmir dispute remained unresolved for more than six decades.

J-K DGP says extra forces to be deployed during Assembly polls

Srinagar, Oct 22 : Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police Kuldeep Khuda has said that extra security would be deployed for the seven-phase polls in the state beginning November 17.

"We are expected to get the required forces in time. They will be deployed as per the requirement. Different strength of forces will be required in different phases," said Kuldeep Khuda, Director General of Police.

Separatist leaders have threatened to boycott any state election and plan to hold protests during the elections.

Khuda said that strict actions would be taken against anybody who tried to disrupt the elections. "Anybody who violated law of land, action will be followed," he added.

28 pick-up vans cross LoC on the first day of trading

Srinagar, KashmirSrinagar, Oct 21 : As many as 28 pick-up vans loaded with goods crossed the “Aman Sethu” (peace bridge) on Tuesday as cross-LoC trade resumed between the divided parts of Kashmir after decades of closure.

In all, 13 truck loads moved across from this side carrying apples and spices while 15 pick-up vans loaded with rice, spices, rock salt, dry dates and raisins drove to this side from across the border.

India, Pakistan open Cross-LoC trade after 60 years

India & PakistanSrinagar, Oct 21 : India and Pakistan restored cross-LoC trade on Tuesday by launching truck services on the Srinagar- Muzaffarabad and Poonch-Rawalkote roads, scripting a new chapter in bilateral ties.

Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra flagged off goods laden trucks making the resumption of trade ties between the divided parts of Kashmir after 60 years.

Three trucks carrying fruits and vegetables were also flagged off by H H Tayabji, Adviser to the Governor from the Rangar International Trade Terminal in Chakan-de-Bagh in Poonch District.
