10 killed, 90 injured in explosion in central Colombo

Sri LankaColombo  - Ten people, including eight police, were killed and 90 others injured in a bomb explosion when a suicide bomber drove a motorbike into a bus carrying police personnel in central Colombo, the Ministry of Defence reported.

The explosion went off near a security checkpoint on the road leading to the president's office within a high-security zone at noon (0630 GMT), army spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said.

It happened 150 metres away from the president's office. Two of those killed and many of the injured were civilians, said the defence ministry.

Advisor to Tamil minister shot dead in northern Sri Lanka

colomoboColombo  - Unidentified gunmen shot dead Tuesday an advisor to a minority Tamil cabinet minister at her residence in northern Sri Lanka, police said.

The advisor Maheshwari Velauthan, was at her residence in Karaveddi, Jaffna, and was shot by three men dressed in military type uniforms.

Velauthan had served as a human rights activist as well as advisor to Minister Douglas Devananda, who heads the Tamil minority party - the Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP).

Velauthan had come under threat from the LTTE while Minister Devananda has already escaped three attempts on his life.
