Iranian sentenced to death in Yemen for drug-trafficking

yemen floodSana'a, Yemen - A Yemeni state security court on Saturday sentenced an Iranian man to death and 11 other Iranians as well as a Pakistani man to 25 years in jail for smuggling drugs into the Gulf state.

The court convicted the 13 men, aged between 24 and 50, of smuggling some 1,400 kilograms of hashish from Iran into Yemeni territorial waters.

The men were arrested in March and their Iranian-flagged boat was seized by Yemeni coast-guard patrols off the south-eastern province of Mahra on the Arabian Sea.

Ayoub Muhammad Houd, 50, was sentenced to death after the court condemned him for leading the group.

Death toll in Yemen floods increases to 50

yemen floodSana'a - The number of people killed in floods in Yemen raised to 50, officials said on Saturday.

About 4300 family were displaces and 877 homes destroyed, after floods from heavy rains hit two provinces in south- eastern Yemen o n Friday, officials told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.

Hamid al-Khanbashi security chief of the province of Hadhramout, some 900 kilometres from the capital Sana'a, said that the number of victims in the province reached 37 people in the province. 2300 family displaced and 500 homes destroyed.

The Yemeni government used schools and government facilities as shelters for families, the official told dpa.

Nine people killed, dozens missing in Yemen floods

yemen floodSana'a, Yemen - At least nine people were killed and dozens were missing after floods from heavy rains hit eastern Yemen, officials said on Friday.

The officials told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa that nearly 400 homes were destroyed in the south-eastern province of Hadhramout, some 900 kilometres from the capital Sana'a.

Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh declared Hadhramout a disaster zone.

Governor Salem al-Khanbashi told the state radio that fatalities were reported from different areas of Hadhramout, but accurate figures could not be gathered owing to the difficulties of reaching all the affected areas.

Yemeni militants sought help from Israeli spy agency

Sana, Yemen Sana'a, Yemen  - Six militants from the Islamic Jihad organization arrested by Yemeni police had tried to approach an Israeli intelligence agency for help to carry out terrorist attacks in the Arab state, a security source said on Tuesday.

The source's comments come one day after Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh said Yemeni police had dismantled a terrorist cell five days ago that was linked to Israeli intelligence services.

Tribesmen release two Colombian hostages in southern Yemen

Yemen Sana'a, Yemen  - Armed tribesmen freed two Colombian engineers after three days of captivity in southern Yemen, local officials said Monday.

"The two men were freed and they are in good condition," Yaslam Abu-Sitt, the mayor of the Ahwar district in the southern province of Abyan, told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.

He said the kidnappers handed the two hostages to the governor of Abyan Ahmad al-Maisary after tribal dignitaries mediated a solution for the crisis.

Abu-Sitt further said the kidnappers received guarantees from government officials that their demands would be met.
