Magazine report says Elton John to visit Cambodia

Fight against AIDS/HIVPhnom Penh - Sir Elton John, British superstar and heavyweight activist in the fight against HIV/AIDS, has told a US magazine he is planning a visit to Cambodia.

Sir Elton and partner David Furnish have raised more than 150 million dollars for projects to assist people living with the virus through the Elton John Aids Foundation since it was set up in 1992.

"This year, we look forward to traveling to Cambodia to visit projects in that country," Kansas City-based Camp Magazine quoted Sir Elton as telling journalist and gay rights activist Mark Segal.

Germany gives 4.3 million dollars to Cambodian Khmer Rouge trial

Germany said it had pledged an additional 4.3 million dollars for the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) 2009 and 2010.

Robbers outside Cambodian bank net 50,000 dollars, police say

Phnom Penh, CombodiaPhnom Penh  - Armed robbers committed a brazen afternoon stickup outside a bank and made off with an estimated 50,000 dollars, in one of the biggest robberies of its kind in the country's history, police said Tuesday.

A Daun Penh district police source said the thieves took the cash at gunpoint in broad daylight at around lunchtime as the customer left Acleda Bank, a major bank in the Cambodian capital.

Last year, members of an Indonesian-led ring were jailed for robbing wealthy-looking bank clients by flattening their car tyres and following them until they were forced to get out of the vehicle.

Cambodian politician Prince Ranariddh announces retirement

Prince Norodom RanariddhPhnom Penh  - Cambodia's Prince Norodom Ranariddh, who became the country's first democratically elected prime minister in memory in 1993, announced his political retirement Thursday.

He announced his decision at a formal dinner in the capital.

Ranariddh, a son of former king Norodom Sihanouk, said he had told his half brother, King Norodom Sihamoni, Thursday morning that he believed he could serve the country better in another capacity.
