Suspected separatists kill three Thai soldiers in ambush Pattani, Thailand - Suspected Muslim insurgents on Friday ambushed and killed three Thai soldiers and wounded another on the 46th anniversary of the Pattani separatist movement.

Amid beefed-up security throughout the deep-South region, separatists ambushed a Thai military patrol in the Srisakorn district of Narathiwat province, 700 kilometres south of Bangkok, leaving three dead and one wounded after a ten minute gunbattle, said Army Colonel Mandate Shinawatra, deputy commander of the regional special task force.

The two soldiers, identified as Sergeant Major Samranmit Phicit, 27, and Private Piyasak Chookraithai, 27, were ambushed in the Bannang Sata district, 750 kilometres south of Bangkok, after falling behind in a patrol of five motorcycles, police said.

Road-side bomb kills ranger, wounds five in Thailand's deep South

Pattani, Thailand - A roadside bomb killed one paramilitary ranger and wounded five others Monday as they were patrolling a trouble-torn district in Narathiwat - part of Thailand's deep South, police said.

The remotely controlled 20-kilogram bomb exploded at about 10 am (0300 GMT) in Ruesoh district of Narathiwat, 800 kilometres south of Bangkok, as a pickup truck carrying a patrol of paramilitary troops passed by, said Ruesoh Police Sergeant Paosri Jaetae.

"We think influential people hired Muslim militants to do this in order to create chaos," said Paosri.
