Dorab Patel Award for Pakistan lawyers

Karachi, Oct 24 : The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has announced that it would confer the second Dorab Patel Award on Pakistani lawyers for their "contribution to public recognition and acceptance of the essential values of the rule of the law, independence of the judiciary and the restoration of ‘true democracy’.

"The HRCP has decided to award the lawyers of Pakistan the Dorab Patel Award for the promotion of the rule of law," said Iqbal Haider, Secretary-General of the HRCP.

He said that the HRCP acknowledged the contribution and role of a large number of lawyers, particularly the young activists among them, and the various bar associations and councils throughout the country, not only in the major cities but also in the districts and the towns.

Pervez Musharraf’s nomination papers risk being rejected over uniform issue: Justice Ijaz Ahmed

Islamabad, Oct 24 : Justice Ijaz Ahmed has said that Pervez Musharraf’s statement on giving up his uniform before taking oath as the next President, submitted before the court, was irrelevant.

He further said that the statement proved that Musharraf is the Army Chief and in the light of this statement, his nomination papers could not be accepted.

Justice Ijaz observed that the document (undertaking) "is irrelevant to decide this case because it has no legal sanctity."

He added that this case would be decided on the basis of documents that had been submitted at the time of nomination papers as it involved the issue of candidacy and not other matters.
