Sangma threatens to go on a fast to end President’s Rule in MeghalayaShillong, Mar 21 : Senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader P. A. Sangma on Saturday said that he would go on a fast unto death till President's rule is not revoked in Meghalaya.

"If President's Rule in the state is not revoked by Tuesday, I, along with other leaders, would go on a fast unto death from Wednesday in Delhi," Sangma told reporters here.

Earlier in the day, Sangma met Janata Dal- United (JDU) chief Sharad Yadav to seek assurances of support for the agitation.

''Duende Quartet'', a Latin jazz group enthralled many music lovers who came from different parts of the State.

Besides popularizing jazz, the event also aimed at encouraging interaction among local musicians in the region.

"I would say that jazzical music that we have was music with a difference. I wish to have more of these in future," said Bonnei Nicole, one of the organizer,

Central Govt. advises imposition of president's rule in Meghalaya

New Delhi, Mar 18: A day after Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) led Meghalaya Progressive Alliance Government in Meghalaya narrowly survived a trust vote in the State Assembly, the Central Government on Wednesday recommended President''s rule in the state.

Briefing reporters here after a meeting of the Union Cabinet, Home Minister P. Chidambaram said: "The cabinet received a report from the (Meghalaya) governor (RS Mooshahary) on the events yesterday. He has stated that there''s a breakdown in the constitutional machinery and has recommended president''s rule. The report has been accepted and a recommendation made to the President."

On Monday, Speaker Bindo M. Lanong suspended five missing MLAs under Anti- Defection Law. The MLAs will not be able to attend the proceedings of the assembly during trust vote.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya Governor Dr. R. S. Mossahari asked the State Assembly to record the vote of confidence in the government to ensure transparency.

Eight workers killed in Meghalaya

 Eight workers killed in MeghalayaShillong, Mar 16 : Eight workers were killed after being trapped inside a coal mine that caved in at Rongsa Awe in Meghalaya's Garo Hills District.

According to police officials, rescue workers recovered the bodies.

Meanwhile, the state government has called for scientific methods of mining to avoid such incidents.

Police officials said the delay in tracing the minors was because of a possibility that the mine might cave in further if heavy machinery was used to remove the debris.
