Young cricketer killed in UP city

uttar-pradeshPromising young cricket player Gagandeep was killed over a paltry scuffle at a kabab shop in Meerut on Friday night.

It is learnt that the whole unpleasant incident occurred around 11:30 pm (on Friday night) when Gagandeep along with his friend was standing outside a shop.

Speaking on this, Inspector Rakesh Kumar, said: “Four youths shot at a trader, Haji Shahnawaz, after a brawl and were escaping from there when Gagandeep, along with his friends, tried to nab them. One of the youths opened fire at Gagandeep. The cricketer was rushed to hospital where he succumbed.”

Key accused in Gangandeep murder case arrestedMeerut (Uttar Pradesh) Oct 10 : The Meerut police on Saturday arrested a person identified as Rahul Chaudhary, allegedly the key accused in the murder of India''s Under-19 cricketer Gangandeep Singh.

Rahul is the son of a head constable. The police also detained ten people including Rahul’s mother for questioning.

On Friday night, Singh was shot dead by an unidentified gunman when he had gone with his two teammates to a hotel in the city.

The hotel owner was killed along with Singh in the incident.


Junior cricketer shot dead in Uttar Pradesh

Meerut, Oct 10  An under-19 cricketer Gangandeep was shot dead by unknown assailants in Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh, police said Saturday.

Gagandeep was shot when he tried to nab one of four youths who had attacked a man in Lal Kurti locality of Meerut late Friday.

"Four youths shot at a trader, Haji Shahnawaz, after a brawl and were escaping from there when Gagandeep, along with his friends, tried to nab them. One of the youths opened fire at Gagandeep. The cricketer was rushed to hospital where he succumbed," Inspector Rakesh Kumar told IANS.

"Curfew was imposed at four police station areas looking at the situation. Today between 9pm- 12 pm the curfew will be relaxed. In Bhramapuri curfew would be imposed after 12pm while in the other three places curfew will be relaxed till 3pm," said Mahaveer Singh, Additional District Magistrate of Meerut.

At least 24 people and an equal number of policemen were injured in the violence.

Protesters also damaged vehicles.

Incidents of arson were also reported late Tuesday night. Three companies of Rapid Action Force have been deployed in the city.

The police had to lob tear gas shells to bring the situation under control. (ANI)

Uttar Pradesh, LucknowNew Delhi  - Five persons were killed and at least three critically injured on Saturday in an explosion at a waste dump in the northern Indian town of Meerut in Uttar Pradesh state, police said.

A group of waste collectors were sorting out rubbish in the Bengali Basti area when a mortar shell discarded by the army exploded, senior police official Raghuveer Lal said.

The victims were boys aged between 10 and 19, the police said. The three injured had been admitted to hospital.

The blast may have been caused by dynamite sticks in the scrap heap, NDTV television reported quoting police sources.

“Some ragpickers found an army mortar shell in the scrap and were trying to extract the metal when the blast occurred,” Senior Superintendent of Police Raghuveer Lal said.

He added, “While five persons died on the spot, two were critically injured.”

Lal further said that it was an “accidental” explosion and not related to any terror activists.

Protests continue over clemency for Pak death row inmate Sarabjit Singh

Meerut, Apr 19: Sarabjit SinghA voluntary organisation and several other people staged a demonstration in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, seeking clemency for Sarabjit Singh, the Indian on death row in Pakistan.

Activists held placards seeking forgiveness for Sarabjit and shouted slogans for his early release.

"He should be released soon. His daughters have also given a warning that they will commit suicide if Sarabjit is hanged. So for him and his daughters, we want the Indian Government to release him as early as possible," said Disha, one of the protestors.


British memorial plaque invites Meerut resident’s fury

Meerat, Sep 22 : A church in Meerut, the nerve centre of the 1857 uprising against British rule by Indian soldiers, has rejected a plaque presented to it by a group of visiting Britons to commemorate the valour shown by British soldiers.

Britons, including seven successors of the British soldiers who suppressed the rebellion, visited St. John's Church.

This church is adjacent to the former British parade ground.

The church refused to accept the plaque saying it would hurt the sentiments of Indians.
