Jerusalem  - A Palestinian stabbed to death an elderly Israeli passerby Thursday in the Jewish settlement of Gilo, south of Jerusalem, Israel Radio reported.

The Palestinian was stopped by two police officers and asked to identify himself, but he drew a knife and stabbed one of the officers.

The officer then shot the stabber, but he escaped and while running away fatally stabbed a second Israeli, a civilian in his 80s, whom he ran into, a witness who chased after the attacker and overpowered him said.

Jerusalem - Israeli President Shimon Peres gave Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni Monday a two-week extension to the period allocated to her to form a new government to replace that headed by outgoing Premier Ehud Olmert.

Livni met with Peres for an hour and 15 minutes Monday morning, and briefed him on her attempts to form a "stable and long-term" government in the initial 28-day period granted her, a statement issued by Peres' office said.

Jerusalem - Karnit Goldwasser, the widow of an Israeli soldier who was abducted by Lebanon's Hezbollah movement and who rose to prominence leading a global compaign for his release, is starting a television career, Israeli media reported on Tuesday.

Goldwasser, 32, is to host a show dealing with environmental issues on Israel's Educational Channel.

Jerusalem - An Israeli exhibition is for the first time displaying to the broader public a series of unique original documents, including the prison memoirs of Nazi kingpin Adolf Eichmann.

Jerusalem  - Internal political developments in Israel, should not overshadow the peace process with the Palestinians, visiting French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said on Sunday.

"Don't forget the peace process," he urged in an interview with Israel Radio. "I know about all your concerns, internal political concerns ... but please, what is important for us, for you, for everybody, is the setting up of a Palestinian state."
