Meira Paibi leader shot dead by militants in Manipur

Imphal, Dec. 28 : The militants in Manipur are becoming increasingly unpopular as they do not even spare women and children from their violent activities.

In the latest incident of brutality, militants shot dead Seram Shanti Devi, leader of a Manipuri women''s group in front of the members of her family.

Shanti was working as the woman secretary of Nongpok Leimarol Apunba Meira Paibi Lup, a joint organization of 12 villages working for welfare of the people .

Shanti Devi's death has shattered the lives of her family members. S. Ranjan Singh, her son, said: "Our mother was the head of the house. She looked after the maintenance of the house. We have been left helpless without her."

Millennium Garden, proposed peaceful recreation center in Manipur

The venture, which is yet to complete, is unique in the militancy-torn Manipur State.

A florist by profession Arun Yumnam wants to develop this recreation "Millennium Garden" at Haorang Sabal, Lamsang Kendra, 15 kms from Imphal, the capital city of Manipur.

Manipur journalists seek protection

Manipur, ImphalImphal, Dec. 3 : The journalistic fraternity in Manipur is outraged over the recent killing of a junior journalist working with the popular English daily, the Imphal Free Press.

Twenty two-year-old Konsam Rishikanta Singh was the lone working member of his family and is survived by two young sisters, a mother and father.

Five gunned down by militants in Manipur

Manipur, ImphalImphal, Nov. 27:Five laborers were shot dead and some seriously injured by suspected Naga militants at Maphou dam area located near the border of Ukhrul and Thoubal districts in Manipur.

The militants in army uniform gunned down five labourers engaged in the construction of the dam over Thoubal river at Maphou area under Litan police station. Equipment used in the construction of the dam were also damaged by the militants Injured people have been admitted to hospital in critical condition.

Manipur journalists on strike, newspapers suspend publication

Manipur, ImphalImphal, Nov 22 : Journalists in Manipur have gone on strike following the killing of one of their colleagues, who is the sixth journalist to be killed in Manipur since 2000.

Agitated newspapers editors and journalists have suspended publication of newspapers seeking protection for newspapers and journalists, and also a vigorous and impartial investigation to find the killers of Rishikant Singh.
