Sea levels to rise a metre this century, German experts warn

Hamburg, Germany - Sea levels around the world will rise one metre this century, according to German scientists who warn that global warming is happening much faster than hitherto predicted.

Citing UN date on climate change, two senior German scientists say that previous predictions were far too cautious and optimistic.

Earlier estimates predicted a rise of 18 to 59 centimetres in sea levels this century. But that estimate is woefully understated, according to Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, who heads the Potsdam Institute for Research on Global Warming Effects, and Jochem Marotzke, a leading meteorologist.

"We now have to expect that the sea level will rise by a metre this century," said Schellnhuber in Berlin.

Tokio Hotel's third album delayed till next year

The group won best new artist honours at the MTV Video Music Awards last month, and MTV Latin Awards this month.

Manager David Jost said, "There'll be no album release this year. It looks as if the third album will be out in March or April next year, probably simultaneously round the globe."

Swiss scolds German finance minister in tax spat

Hamburg - Swiss Foreign Minister Micheline Calmy-Rey scolded a German leader in an interview published Saturday and denied Switzerland was a tax haven.

In remarks to Der Spiegel, the German weekly, she said Switzerland was "astonished" at the tone of remarks Tuesday by German Finance Minister Peer Steinbrueck, who grumbled Berne was not tipping Germany off about tax evaders.

She warned him not to try to place Switzerland on an Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) black-list of nations that assist foreigners to evade taxes.

This would be a breach of a German-Swiss taxation treaty, she charged. "It would not be the approach one expects from a state bound by the rule of law," added Calmy-Rey.
