Car makers to re-invent the car as industry braces for worst crisis

Hamburg  - Car factories from Detroit, to Tokyo and Munich are grinding to a halt as the car industry faces its biggest shake-up in decades with millions of unsold, new cars standing idle in the parking lots of dealerships and storage depots.

But while analysts are asking themselves whether big names such as General Motors, Chrysler and Ford will survive the winter, engineers are looking at nothing less than re-inventing the car for a new era of sustainability.

Paradoxically, the crisis in the industry comes at a time when car makers are announcing almost weekly, new innovations in clean-drive technology and dealerships are offering special discounts. Cars have never been safer, more efficient and versatile.

Mercedes and BMW LogoHamburg - Mercedes and BMW have both come out strongly in support of Germany continuing to host a Formula One grand prix in the wake of reports at the weekend that the country could be without a F1 race in 2010 for financial reasons.

Hockenheim GmbH, the cash-strapped company that runs the Hockenheim circuit, is considering withdrawing from the 2010 German Grand Prix and officials from the Nuerburgring have already said they would be unable to stage the event, which would leave the country without a F1 race for the first time in nearly half a century.

Gloom in Schalke, Hertha on a high in tale of two cities

Schalke 04 LogoHamburg - In the Ruhr area city of Gelsenkirchen, they've been waiting 50 years. In Berlin, it's been even longer.

Passions run high in the former, one of the traditional heartlands of German football, where a pall of gloom hangs over Schalke 04 after what is turning out to be a disappointing Bundesliga season.

Another disappointing season, one could say, for despite huge ambitions - and a huge outlay on new players - Schalke's last league title was in 1958, before the Bundesliga was formed in 1962.

Mobile phone cameras no substitute for digital cameras

Mobile phone cameras no substitute for digital cameras Hamburg  - Even though modern mobile phones can take good photos, they are no match for a good digital camera, according to a test by Germany's Computer Bild magazine.

The test compared six mobile phone cameras ranging in price from 170 to 500 euros (229 dollars to 675 dollars) and Sony's DSC-H3 camera, which costs just under 280 euros.

The best camera scored a good grade of 2.3. Nonetheless, the best mobile phone, the Nokia 6220 Classic, scored a satisfactory grade of 3.4.
