Athens - Greece is detaining hundreds of illegal immigrants in cramped an squalid conditions at a reception center on the Mediterranean island of Lesvos, the French charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) charged Wednesday.

Some 800 immigrants, many of them from war-torn Afghanistan, are living in overcrowded rooms in the detention center without proper sanitation and medical care, according to the agency. Some are suffering from serious diseases.

"They do not have adequate access to showers and toilets," MSF local project leader Giorgos Karayiannis was quoted by the Greek daily Kathimerini as saying.

Athens, July 29 : A 21-meters long ancient Greek ship, which archaeologists believe sank in a storm some 800 metres off the Gela coast in Greece while transporting goods from the Greek colony in Gela back to Greece in around 500 BC, has been pulled out of the seabed, where it lay for nearly 2500 years.

On Monday coastguards and experts from the Caltanissetta Culture Department salvaged the vessel using a boat equipped with a crane able to lift loads of up to 200 tonnes. Around 20 other support craft joined the operation, sounding their fog horns when the wreck finally emerged from the water.

Greek police destroy bomb outside policy research institute Athens - Greek police destroyed a bomb which was set to go off outside a policy research institute which is affiliated with the European Union, reports said Tuesday.

The bomb outside the Economic and Social Council building near central Athens was destroyed by bomb squads.

Police rushed to the scene after receiving three calls by an unidentified individual. No-one claimed responsibility and officials said no-one was hurt.

Police prepare to evacuate tourists from fire-raged Greek islandAthens  - Emergency crews said they were preparing to evacuate more than 2,000 tourists from the Dodecannese island of Rhodes as a massive forest fire burned out of control for the fourth straight day on Friday.

Authorities declared a state of disaster on the island, where dozens of homes have been burned and at least 4,000 acres of forest destroyed.

Officials said the evacuation of tourists from hotels was being undertaken as a precautionary measure.
