The drug consignment was seized when the Officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) searched their luggage. The Air India flight was preparing for its take-off when the former got hold of the couple. Raminder Singh Nagra, 60 and his wife Harjinder Kaur, 56 were accused of violating the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.

Shawl industry flourishing in Amritsar

Amritsar, Sep. 19 : With winters approaching, the over two centuries old Amritsar Shawl industry is experiencing a boom in the domestic as well as international market.

The industry, which was known for traditional hand-woven and embroidered shawls, has now mechanized its production by installing world class machines.

Though the Kashmiri shawls that are popularly known to have dominated the Indian shawl industry for ages, shawls from Amritsar have also grown to earn a distinct recognition on national and international level.

It is said that Kashmiri migrants established the shawl industry here during 19th century. With political patronage, the industry flourished.

Sikh Jatha on a 10-day tour to Pakistan for Guru Nanak Dev’s death anniversary

Punjab AmritsarAmritsar, September 18 : A Sikh Jatha (group) comprising nearly 500 devotees left for Pakistan on Thursday morning by train for the death anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, the first Sikh Guru.

They will observe the occasion at Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib, situated in Pakistan’s Narowal district on September 22.

Besides Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib, the Jatha would also visit pay respects at various others historical Sikh shrines including Punjab Sahib, Dera Sahib, Nankana Sahib, Sancha Saudah Sahib and Rahra Sahib during their 10-day tour to Pakistan.
