Residents in Allahabad celebrate Holi with milk, butter and curdAllahabad, Mar 9 : A tribe of milkmen community celebrated Holi, the festival of colours, with milk, curd and butter during the weekend.

They worship Lord Krishna as their family deity and thus celebrate the festival using his favourite items - milk, butter, curd and Chhach (butter milk).

"Milk and curd are used to play Holi. we perform prayers for Lord Krishna and then celebrate Holi two days before Holi and two days after," said Uday Bansi, a resident.

Dona could not name the political party that approached Sourav. Unable to remember the details, she said, "Such offers keep coming... I don''t remember who was it... I think it was Samajwadi Party."

Allahabad, Jan 26 : Thousands of Hindu devotees took a holy dip in rivers across India including ''Sangam'', the confluence of river Ganga , Yamuna and mythical Saraswati today, on the occasion of `Mauni Amavasya'' which marks the new moon day of the Hindu month of Magha.

Braving chilly weather, a large number of devout Hindus from several places including Allahabad, Varanasi, Ayodhya and Mathura, thronged the Sangam in the wee hours of the morning and took the holy dip, after which they visited temples and offered prayers.

Hindus consider the holy dip at ''Sangam'' on ''Mauni Amavasya'' extremely auspicious. The event holds a special sigmificance when it falls on Monday.

A partial solar eclipse is also taking place on the same day.

Allahabad police rescue tortoisesAllahabad, Jan 23 : Allahabad police had recovered thousands of baby turtles and adult tortoises from gunny bags found in a truck.

Three persons were detained on charges of smuggling these animals.

Senior Superintendent of Police Ashok Jain said further investigations are on to nab the kingpin of this racket.

"A Special Operational Group (SOG) team and a Tharwai Police Station team jointly seized five and half to six tonnes of live tortoises. They were being smuggled out from Etah," claimed Jain.

Arjun SinghAllahabad, Jan 21 : Union Minister for Human Resource Development Arjun Singh today inaugurated Nehru Gram Bharati Vishwavidyalaya at Dubawal in Allahabad.

He also laid the foundation stone of the Administrative Bloc of the university.

Nehru Gram Bharati Vishwavidyalaya has been established in accordance with the ideals of Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, who always wanted the establishment of institutes of higher education in rural areas so that the rural children need not go to cities for higher or technical education.
